Runes are stones that have pictures on them. The pictures have meanings.
Runes can be used much like Tarot cards. Personally, though I’ve tried to work with them, I’ve never quite gotten the hang of them.
I don’t want to have to look up the meanings in a book, and there is nothing intuitive about Runes for me. Of course, some people have great success with them and use them for spiritual growth as well as a divination tool. I just don’t connect with them, really. They are like the I Ching for me – some lines on a stick or a stone that you have to look up the definition of.
The definitions actually do give me a lot to think about, but there is such a disconnect from having to look them up in a book that I don’t like it. The only time I’ve really had any fun with Runes is when I drew one in conjunction with a Tarot reading. I enjoy that. But even then, though the definitions make sense and can provide insight, I just don’t enjoy working with them because I have to look them up. I’ve even tried memorizing some of the stones, but the pictures don’t seem to have anything to do with the definitions in most cases (as far as I can tell).
Have you ever tried working with Runes? What is your take on them? I’d love to hear about it.

I do like how you are able to acknowledge that some things connect and work for you but others do not and yet you are totally accepting that this might not be the case for others. Far too often I find this isn’t the case and it’s refreshing to see your views Amethyst.
I once was asked to pick a runestone from a large basket. It was made into a talisman for me but it was so long ago I can’t even remember what the symbol’s meaning was. Your post has inspired me to go find it and look it up.
I always thought runes were the big stones at places like Stonehenge and Avesbury. Having been lucky enough to have been both places as a child I feel like I remember that word associated with them. Perhaps that was writing that is on Stonehenge’s. I have heard that Stonehenge is roped off now and you can’t touch them anymore. My mom is British and more in tune with spiritual things than I am. She had very strong feelings overcome her when she leaned on the stones at Avesbury. She has also had visions touching the ruins of Sheldon Church here in the Carolina Low Country. I will have to ask her about what runes mean to her.
Runes were my first divination tool; I asked a question and pulled one from a basket in a store years ago, and when I read the description, I immediately ordered a set. To me they are crystal clear; there is no grey area with them and they are my go-to when I need to stop driving myself crazy with tarot and get to the bottom of things. 😉
Interesting – i too don’t resonate with Runes and do not like to just “go with a book”. I used to only work with Angel cards for readings until asked to do Tarot. I had reservations but I now find that they work well together – Tarot first and then a few Agel cards that always confirm the tarot message!
Hey, if you have your programs down pat- why ruin it with runes?
Stick with what you know- and do well!
The only time I tried a rune reading for myself the response that came did not correspond to an answer I could understand. I’m so curious to learn more about them from an energetical point of view too;)
