Oils are not something I have a lot of experience with. I had a witch make a special oil just for me, but I haven’t used it often.
Sometimes oils are used to anoint candles before doing spell work or rituals.
At other times they are used directly on the skin, in a bath, or a few drops are placed in water that is burned over a candle to release the scent as in aromatherapy.
I have been persistent to oil and even herbal magic for some time and haven’t utilized either much in my own work. My excuse with oils is that specialty oils can be so expensive. A vial like that pictured above can run $10, $15, or more, depending on the type. You can see this at holistic stores, some grocery stores, and many new age stores. Still, tinctures tend to be concentrated and last a long time, so the price can be worth it. Unless, of course, you don’t like that particular scent or the oil doesn’t seem to work for you.
Still, I like the idea of using oils more in my own work. When I do use them it has often been in conjunction with candle work or meditation. I put a few drops in water and burn it over a candle. I think Ill pick up something this week to use and see how it turns out.
I’m loving this Witchy Challenge. It definitely gives me a lot of different things to think about. What oils have you used? I’d love to hear about what’s worked for you!

I really love sandalwood and patchouli oils. Oils really last for a long time, so I wouldn’t fret about spending $10 on a bottle unless you’re using it a lot. If you are, you could always make your own! A lot of folks I know do, using a scentless oil as the base oil in a blend, and adding in the more expensive essential (and potent) top oils.
Here’s a good link to check out if you want to make your own! ๐ Loving the Witchy challenge you’re doing, sounds really cool! Congrats on coming out of the broom closet, too!
Aw, it looks like the link didn’t show up, Gwen. And I was all excited about seeing it. ๐
Lavender oil……for no other reason that I think it smells great!
I agree, Beth. I actually planted some lavender last year. It’s very pretty, too. ๐
